A Quick Tip
Seasoned hardwood is dry and makes a clunking noise when two pieces are struck together. Unseasoned firewood may have sap on the ends and make a dull thud when hit together.
Seasoned Hardwood for a Superior Burn
Hardwood is the safer option for your family’s fireplace. Softwood is usually very resinous, meaning it’s easy to light and burns fast. That may seem like a positive at first, but you’ll also need to use up to twice as many logs for the same energy output as hardwood. A fire built from softwood typically has large flames that crackle and spark.
- Burns longer and cleaner
- Produces less smoke
- Gives off more heat
- Ignites quickly because it’s dry
- Creates fewer sparks
Softwood grows very quickly compared to hardwood. They are much lighter as a result, and the wood is less dense. Most of the time, it burns too fast, produces too much smoke, and causes a buildup of resin in the chimney.
